Its name is made up of the initial letters of Scuderia Ferrari plus the current year. It is the second car to be built since ground effect returned to Formula 1 after a forty year break.
Although it can be regarded as an evolution of last year’s F1-75, it is a completely new car, based on experience gained last year, while maintaining the design philosophy of the large scalloped sides, with the aim of staying within the weight limit and reducing drag.
Engine development is frozen, however a great deal of work went into fixing reliability issues, the team’s Achilles Heel last season. The root causes of the problems encountered on track were analysed in depth. The work went across all areas from design to experimentation to try and evaluate new solutions in a very short space of time.
