The curtain opened on the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship season at the Lusail International Circuit. One hour into the 1812 KM of Qatar, the 499Ps of the Ferrari - AF Corse team held sixth and seventh position, respectively, with car numbers 50 and 51 driven by Miguel Molina and James Calado in the first stint.
The 499P number 83 of the AF Corse team was eighth with Robert Kubica.
The race kicked off at 11 a.m. local time, with air and asphalt temperatures of 20.6 and 31.9°C, respectively. At the green flag, Molina made an excellent start, recovering three positions and leading the race in the 499P for the first 15 laps. In the sister car, Calado, who set off in eighth, finished the first lap in Top-6.
After the first pit stop, the official Hypercars, starting on hards, were sixth and seventh after the first sixty minutes, with Molina and Calado. The Spaniard then lost eight positions because of a drive-through at the start of the second hour. The AF Corse 499P number 83, driven in the first stints by Robert Kubica, who shares the car with the Prancing Horse's official drivers, Yifei Ye and Robert Shwartzman, was eighth.
