    2024 RACE REVIEW

    Scuderia Ferrari HP came away from the British Grand Prix with just eleven points courtesy of Carlos Sainz who finished fifth and picked up the extra point for the fastest race lap. The way the race played out it was the best he could do. Charles Leclerc failed to score, as his aggressive strategy did not pay off and he finished 14th.

    It wasn’t an easy weekend, but today Carlos drove a strong race as he had a good start, was fast in the wet and his final position was the best he could achieve today and it included the additional point for the fastest lap.
    On Charles’ side it was a bit more difficult as we gambled and the strategy didn’t pay off. He had a great start and moved up three places then he lost some time getting past Lance Stroll. So, when both Mercedes went off the track at turn 1 in the rain we agreed on the decision to bring Charles in for Intermediates, as an aggressive strategy was the only way to try and move him up the order. As we saw, it didn’t pay off and probably cost us a P6. This weekend we learned a lot about the car and we made a good step forward which is encouraging for the rest of the season. Now we need to build on what we have learned and apply it to the next couple of races. Everyone in the team, including me, is impatient to get some good results.

    It was a very solid performance today
    and I think we maximised the result with P5 and fastest lap. We executed a difficult race well under mixed conditions I was able to close the gap to the cars ahead. Unfortunately, when the track dried we were lacking a bit of pace and had to settle for fifth. Clearly, we still need to take a step forward to close the gap to our rivals. We now have some time off to regroup and come back stronger in Hungary.

    We had a good start today but unfortunately, the race didn’t play out as we hoped on my side.
    The rain was increasing from lap 15 and we thought it would get stronger so we pitted for Inters. It may have been an aggressive choice, but it seemed that it could be worth it at the time, considering the feeling that I had in the car and our weather prediction. Unfortunately, the rain was only really strong enough for those tyres a few laps later and my tyres were worn down by then, so that we haad to make another stop. It went wrong and we have to review our race and make sure we can maximise every opportunity going forward.

    I gave it everything out there but we knew Silverstone was going to be a tough track for us.
    The conditions were also very tricky so qualifying today was even more challenging. With hindsight, I think we could have left the garage a bit earlier for the last run, as the out-lap was messy, fighting for position with other cars and the tyres were not in the right window before the last push. Anyhow, we need to keep working to try and close the gap because our performance was not great overall. Still, the points are given out tomorrow, so I look forward to the race, which could be interesting with the weather.

    Not an easy qualifying.
    Our main goal is assessing our situation as we have been struggling for a few weekends now. We did the right thing by splitting the configurations across our cars yesterday and we gained valuable insights that will be beneficial in the long term. However, by focusing on these tests, you may not optimise your weekend as a whole and that’s what happened today in qualifying. We are working on understanding in which direction we have to push to bounce back as soon as possible.

    Silverstone Circuit

    Along with the Italian race, the British Grand Prix is the only event never to have missed a year on the Formula 1 calendar. For years now it’s been held on the historic Silverstone circuit, now 5.891 kilometres long, based on what used to be the perimeter roads of a military airfield. The first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix was held here on 13 May 1950. Alfa Romeo took a clean sweep of the top three places, watched by King George VI. The weather generally plays a part: even if it takes place in the height of summer, there’s always a reasonably high chance of rain. The 2010 layout has been changed significantly, with the introduction of the new Wellington Straight, while the start-finish line has been moved to just after Club corner. However, left untouched are the famous Copse, Becketts and Stowe corners, which remain very quick and technically demanding. Ferrari has won in the UK 16 times, the first courtesy of José Froilan Gonzalez in 1951, which was the Scuderia’s first ever Formula 1 win, while the last came in 2018 with Sebastian Vettel. 

    Wellington Straight

    There’s no lack of passing places at Silverstone, but after the layout was changed, one of the best became this new straight, where the use of DRS is permitted.


    Finish line (or pit lane)

    In 1998, Michael Schumacher made history here: the German Ferrari driver won a chaotic race having taken a stop&go penalty by coming into pit lane on the very last lap.
