Ferrari in pole position at 6 Hours of Spa

Spa-Francorchamps 10 May 2024

The Ferrari 499P number 50 took centre stage in today’s qualifying, securing pole position for the Prancing Horse at the 6 Hours of Spa. Antonio Fuoco secured the result in the Hyperpole, taking his second consecutive pole position following his success at Imola. Thus, he and his teammates Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen will start from the front in the Belgian round.

Meanwhile, the other official Ferrari – AF Corse team Hypercar, featuring Alessandro Pier Guidi, Antonio Giovinazzi and James Calado, who drove it in qualifying, will set off from eleventh.

Finally, the AF Corse team’s 499P number 83, shared by Maranello official drivers Yifei Ye and Robert Shwartzman with Robert Kubica, will start from ninth in the third round of the FIA WEC. The green flag at the 6 Hours will be waved tomorrow at 1 p.m. (local time).

Qualifying. The session started approximately 15 minutes late due to a red flag disrupting the LMGT3 class Hyperpole. Air and asphalt temperatures were 20.2°C and 30.7°C, respectively.

The Italian driver clocked 2’02”462 on his fourth lap at the wheel of the number 50 Ferrari 499P, securing the fastest time for his crew and a spot in the next session reserved for the top ten cars. Meanwhile, in the number 51 Hypercar, the British driver posted a time of 2’03”002, trailing his teammate by 0’’540 and missing the Top-10 by just 21 thousandths of a second.

The giallo-modena liveried 499P of AF Corse, piloted by Robert Kubica—who shares the car with Ferrari officials Yifei Ye and Robert Shwarzman—finished fourth, trailing the front-runner by 0.414 seconds.

Hyperpole. In the decisive phase on Friday, Antonio Fuoco continued to dominate, setting the pace with a lap time of 2’02”600 on his third of four laps. Thus, the 499P he shares with Molina and Nicklas will start from the front of the grid tomorrow.

Kubica’s 499P will set off from ninth, finishing 1’448 seconds behind Ferrari number 50 in the Hyperpole. The number 51 Hypercar, crewed by Pier Guidi-Calado-Giovinazzi, will start two places further back.

Numbers. Ferrari and Antonio Fuoco’s pole position in Belgium is their fourth in the top class of endurance racing. The 499P number 50, piloted by Fuoco, previously secured pole positions at Sebring and Le Mans in 2023 and at Imola and Spa earlier this year.
