A pair of exclusive new V12s are united by a shared DNA that combines the most powerful road car engine in Ferrari history with groundbreaking aerodynamic and driving technologies
Highlights – and there are many – include a V12 with the both the highest output of any Ferrari road-car engine, together with the highest rev limit of any road-going model from the Prancing Horse. The figures of 830cv and 9,500rpm from the 6.5-litre V12 are nothing short of remarkable, but alongside the intense power is incredible response and an inimitable soundtrack.
To achieve such heights the naturally-aspirated 830cv engine has been significantly re-engineered and includes titanium con-rods, a lighter crankshaft, and a new cam system derived from Ferrari’s F1 experience.
The single air duct of the 812 Competizione is flanked by two carbon-fibre intakes for the brakes. Cooling performance of the engine's fluids is improved by 10%, while the operating temperatures of the brakes have been reduced by around 30°C
The performance of the engine is matched by a new exhaust system, which harmonises with the intake system to create an unmistakably thrilling sound. Shift times are reduced by 5% for the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and the new car’s changes are even more intense thanks to the extra 500rpm in maximum revs allowed by the V12.
While power has gone up, weight has come down, by a total of 38kg. Carbon-fibre was used extensively on the exterior – especially on the front bumpers, rear bumpers, rear spoiler and air intakes – as well as within the interior.
Detail changes including the use of lightweight technical fabrics and a reduction in sound-proofing. Further reducing mass are lightweight forged aluminium wheels and titanium studs, a lithium-ion battery, while even the engine oil tank is 1kg lighter.
The aerodynamics are no less impressive, with a significant increase in downforce. At the same time, cooling efficiency is improved by 10% without increasing the dimensions and weight of the radiating masses.
At the front of both cars, the evacuation of the hot air is enhanced by the vents on the bonnet either side of the central carbon-fibre ‘blade’.
The brake cooling concept was completely redesigned around the new front 'Aero' calliper which debuted on the SF90 Stradale and which has an air intake integrated into its casting.
The rear of the 812 Competizione demonstrates its aerodynamic prowess, with vortex generators, a full-width spoiler and diffuser, together with relocated exhausts that use learnings from F1 to generate additional downforce
The rear diffuser extends right across the full width of the car and the spoiler is now not only higher, but also extends across almost the entire width of the car. The spoiler and diffuser work together to generate the maximum downforce possible over the rear axle.
The relocation of the exhaust opens up the possibility of introducing a solution typical of F1 cars from the 2010s: dynamic interaction between the exhaust gases and the diffuser’s field. In this configuration, the hot flow of gas from the exhaust pipes energises the ‘cold’ flow from the diffuser thereby guaranteeing additional downforce.
The rear screen of the 812 Competizione is unique, and features three pairs of vortex generators. Part of the air flow is deflected towards the sides of the spoiler which boosts downforce generation.
To take full advantage of the additional engine and aerodynamic performance, the 812 Competizione debuts many innovative components. These include the first use of independent four-wheel steering, the evolution of the Side Slip Control (SSC) system to version 7.0, and the development of bespoke new Michelin Cup2R tyres.
The independent rear-wheel steering features a new electronic management system that enables the right and left actuators to be actioned individually rather than synchronised. This evolution delivers exceptional agility and precision in cornering.
The transverse groove across the bonnet – in which the carbon-fibre blade sits – proved an innovative way of disguising air vents for the engine bay, while also increasing their surface area
Derived from the 812 Superfast, the new duo are dedicated to a very unique group of collectors and enthusiasts who will be able to experience the innovative technological concepts that have been applied to the engine, vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics.
As such, the two cars follow in the tradition of their V12 special series predecessors, the exclusive F12tdf and 599 GTO – but have raised performance to new heights.
